Here is the 2007 Meet Schedule.  Below the schedule you will find event and entry information as well as description of the different types of meets.  This is a very long and important section and pretty much follows the handbook.  Please review it in its entirety.

Events

At meets, swimmers compete against other swimmers of the same gender in the same age group.  The five age groups are:

  • 8 and under
  • 9 and 10
  • 11 and 12
  • 13 and 14
  • 15 - 18

The swimmer's age as of May 1st of the swim season determines which age group he/she will swim in for the entire season.

A regular season meet consists of seven types of events.  There are five individual events:

  • Freestyle
  • Backstroke
  • Butterfly
  • Breaststroke
  • Individual Medley

Team events include the freestyle relay and medley relay.  In 1998, the CCSL added the 50 yard (or meter) freestyle individual events for the 13-14 and 15-18 age groups.  Each age group competes in each event (except individual medley for 8 and under).  There are a total of 80 events in a regular season meet and some events have multiple heats.  For a list of events, check your SBAST handbook.

Entries

A swimmer may be entered in as many as four(4) events in a regular season meet.  However, the coach may not be able to enter all swimmers in four (4) events.

Heats and Scoring

What is Heat?  Most competition pools have six (6) or eight (8) lanes.  When you have more than six or eight swimmers eligible to compete, you have to have additional "heats"  to accommodate the swimmers.  For example, if there are 30 competitors which are going to swim in the 50 yard freestyle in a six lane pool, we will have five (5) heats.  When there are multiple heats in an event, they are arranged from the slowest to fastest swimmers and only Heat 1 (fastest) scores points for the team.  The scoring heat is always designated as Heat 1.

Ribbons

Ribbons are awarded to all swimmers in all heats except for disqualifications.  The event and unofficial time will be recorded on the back.  The ribbons will be distributed at a practice session the week after the meet.  Have a special place to show off your Shark ribbons!

Disqualifications

Swimmers are sometimes disqualified during a race, usually for executing a stroke illegally, illegal turns and improper starts and/or finishes.  Please remember and help your swimmer understand that disqualifications are not a personal attack.  We all make mistakes and can only learn from them when someone tells us we have made a mistake.  League and team officials make a great effort to help these swimmers understand what was done wrong and often have advice on how to correct the error.  We want this to be a positive experience, even when things do not go perfectly, and we work very hard to attain that goal.

The Starter, Stroke and Turn Judges and the Referee may disqualify swimmers.  These individuals are volunteers who have received CCSL training.  Their purpose is to assure that no swimmer gains an unfair advantage over another.  Please represent yourself and your team well by being courteous and respectful to all officials.

Should you have a question about a call an official makes, please do not address your concern to the official on deck.  Contact your Team Representative (Sandra Rodriguez) or her designee.  The Team Representative only has 30 minutes from the time the event was completed to notify the Referee if a protest is to be filed.    The referee's decision is final on all protests.  Click here to view list of our Board of Directors.

Times & Records

Swimmers should be aware that they are competing against the clock as well as other swimmers in the water.  The swimmer's goal should be to improve their time at each meet.  Swimmers can achieve either a Reserve or Championship qualifying time for each individual event in which they compete.  Swimmers have a "novice" standing for a particular stroke when their best official time is less than the championship cut-off times.  These cut-off times for each event and age group are listed in the SBAST Handbook, and the CCSL Handbook.

Click here to view the champ times on the CCSL web site.

Learn to read the qualifying time table with your swimmer.  Keep his/her times on their personal swim record so both of you can chart the progress.  The handbook contains a Personal Swim Record or you can download one by clicking here.

Note that the time standards are shown both in yards and meters.  Ashley Pointe is a yard pool.  There are several meter pools within the league.  Swim time in a meter pool may be converted to yard time by dividing the meter time by 1.1

Missing A Meet - Very Important!!!

Are you going on vacation during the regular season?  No problem, just follow the guideline below.

Notify a co-head coach in writing no later than 10 days prior to the meet that you know you will miss.  Missing a meet without notice for anything other than an unforeseen emergency will result in the swimmer missing the next meet.

Why do we make such a big deal if your swimmer is entered and doesn't show up?  The "scratch" causes the meet clerks to re-seed the entire meet, substitutes must be found for relays where possible.  This can delay the start of a meet by as much as an hour, not to mention the disappointment by the three remaining members of a relay team that cannot compete in the relay event if a substitute is not found.  We understand that illness and unexpected emergencies arise, so please make an effort to contact us as soon as you know that your swimmer will not be participating in a meet.  Board Member phone numbers are in your handbook and published here.

Arrival Time

All swimmers should arrive at the pool by 6:30 am for roll-call and warm-ups.  If a swimmer arrives late, he/she may find that they have already been scratched from the meet.  Once a swimmer is scratched, we cannot reinstate them.  Should an earlier arrival time be required, the coaching staff will notify the swimmers during practice.  If you are running late, please contact a coach or Board Member by phone.

Coaches must call roll shortly after 6:30 am (before warm-ups) so that substitutions for "no-shows" can be arranged if possible.  The paperwork for these substitutions must be completed before the meet can begin.

Swimmers Stay With Your Team

During swim meets, all swimmers need to sit with the team in the Shark's Tent Area.  The swimmers will be notified when its time to go to the ready area for an event.  For younger children, all parents are notified of the event numbers their swimmer will be participating in.  We ask all parents to make sure that their swimmer reports to the ready area five (5) events before their event.  Swimmers are lined up in event, heat and lane order well in advance of their event to keep the heats running smoothly.  There is also a tall sign which has the number of the event that needs to report to the ready area and we also make regular announcements.

Very young swimmers and some first time swimmers may get a Big Shark assigned to them for a particular meet.  These Big Sharks have several years of experience and will help your swimmers to get to their events.

Please note:  All events will be started on schedule whether or not all swimmers are present when the event begins.

Questions & Complaints

During swim meets, any questions or complaints about actions of officials or the opposing team must be directed to the CCSL Team Representative (Deborah Helm or Frank DeLeon) or his/her designee who, in turn, will relay the question or complaint to the referee.  CCSL rules prohibit parents and swimmers from approaching judges or referees directly.  If you cannot find a team representative, try to find any Board Member.

Need to Leave Early?

Swimmers should avoid leaving a meet before it is over, especially if they have events that are still pending.  This often causes the team to lose points and relay teams to be scratched.  Even if they have completed all their events, we may need him/her as a lat minute substitution if someone becomes unexpectedly sick during the course of the day.

Therefore, all swimmers must notify a coach if they need to leave before the meet is over.  Swimmers who leave before swimming all their events or without prior permission from a coach will not be entered in the next meet.  If you know that you will have to pull your swimmer early at a meet, please notify the head coach in writing ten (10) days on advance so that he/she can be scheduled for earlier events.
